Last night, around 10:30pm, at the southwest corner of Union Square, there were 20 or so kids trying to do cool things with glowsticks, but failing. There was a tent, and underneath that tent, there was a DJ who was playing music but not very loudly and not very ravey.
It was a pathetic rave attempt, but it was an attempt nonetheless. And really there is no better place to throw an outdoor rave than Union Square - the apex of weirdness that is so characteristic of New York. Had the music been better and louder, had more people shown up, it might have been a pretty cool experience. Rave revival glowsticking in the rain. So romantic.
But it wasn’t like that, and it wasn’t cool at all, and this is where I work in a Mean Girls reference - Gretchen, stop trying to make rave revival happen; it’s not going to happen.
Flavorwire » Miranda July Makes Art That Requires People
“It’s summertime in New York City, and instead of sitting in cramped apartments or crowded coffee shops, people are once again congregating in parks. In light of this, multi-talented artist Miranda July decided this was the perfect time to set up a public art installation in the city’s Union Square. The project is calledEleven Heavy Things, and consists primarily of gray pedestals with text written on them by July herself, encouraging people to stand on and interact with its components. The installation is available for all to see and fool around with until October 3.”
I love Union Square. Even though there’s a Nordstrom’s Off the Rack now and plans for a Fridays in the near future, I still love it.
As for Miranda July… sometimes yes, sometimes no.
