S.C.U.M. - 586 (New Order Cover)
The “Leave Me Alone” cover by Destroyer has been making its rounds over the past few days. I was surprisingly pleased with the cover of my favorite New Order song ever, and I’m equally surprisingly pleased with the cover of “586” (my second favorite New Order song ever).
But. Ok. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but all of these covers kind of… sound… super retro? Like the sound ranges from the mid ’80s to 1999. In fact, some of the originals sound more current than the covers do. It’s kind of weird. Not bad, just weird. It’s like a covers compilation created by contemporaries rather than something put together decades later. Like this cover of “586”? Yea, I can imagine this playing at a cyber goth rave in 1995. Like during a cool down or something.
I don’t know. A few days ago, I overhead a couple of bros on the L train talking about how funk and disco are like totally making a comeback? And how one of their friends DJs and throws down some like really cool funky beats? I’m not saying that has anything to do with New Order; just something something “the cyclical nature of trends,” something about nostalgia.
Anyway, really, no complaints. This is far less of a disappointment than that Siamese Dream covers compilation Myspace and Spin put out a few years ago. Then again, Myspace. So. Yea.
