I was at a bar that had a cover band, and they played requests all night. You wrote the song you wanted and put it in a bowl. The band would play, or try to play, whichever song title that ended up in the singer’s hand. After pulling a string of unknown songs, he pulled out one of my requests. It was Lightning Crashes by Live, and the whole band was so stoked. They did a pretty great cover, and they even looked the part of a mid-90s alt rock band. I’m sure that the whole experience was not entirely unlike when a very attractive and well groomed person pays for sex.

Turning the volume up for the last minute of this song and walking really fast down a Manhattan street does not, in fact, mimic the sensation of turning up the volume as loud as it will go while you’re driving on a dark stretch of a state road with the windows down and screaming at the top of your lungs.
Yea, I don’t know, it’s just not, like, the same, you know?
Here’s the agenda for the next couple of weeks. I’ll post a lot of Björk stuff in preparation for Wednesday night. Which will lead me to think about about the ’90s and when “Oh So Quiet” was like HUGE and the swan dress. Which will lead me to think about MTV. Which will lead me to think about the VJs I grew up with (Kennedy, Simon Rex, Bill Bellamy, Downtown Julie Brown, Thalia, Matt Pinfield). Which will lead me to think about MTV News and Kurt Loder, John Norris, Serene Altschul, Iann Robinson and of course… we come back full swing to Gideon Yago. Which will then lead me to think about other dudes I’d like to marry real hard, and then normality will be restored.
Sometimes you need to watch an old music video to make you not nostalgic for the ’80s, because just listening to the song makes the ’80s seem like a fun, carefree time full of saxophones.
“Since 2003, we’ve been traveling back through time to rediscover and preserve the history of the legendary MTV U.S. series, 120 Minutes, which played alternative music videos with VJs, guests, and live performances, as well as its official successor, Subterranean on MTV2.
Music videos still exist, of course, but it’s just not the same. We want to remember some of MTV’s better moments, so we’ve assembled an incredible archive of playlists, videos, and interviews.”
This. Is. The best thing. EVER. In the whole. Wide. World.
Yet another reason to adore Dave Holmes, for sharing this link. I will be switching between The X-Files and this website for the next few weeks.
Hello future self. I am doing this to jog your memory. You have always been one for nostalgia. Also, you can't seem to remember certain details from the past few years. Your name is Soma, by the way. In case you forgot or something.
